SGT. Alvin Christianson has deployed twice to Iraq. His first deployment in 2006 and 2007 was with the 1-121 C Company Field Artillery. Christianson's unit provided convoy security throughout Iraq. He traveled over 20,000 miles on Iraqi roads both as a driver and as a top gunner. His current deployment is with the 829th Engineer Unit stationed near the Baghdad Airport where he serves as a detainee operations NCOIC. Prior to his latest deployment, Christianson was a loss prevention associate at Walmart in Richland Center, Wisconsin.

Petty Officer Third Class (E-4) Joshua Zimmerman is a Coast Guard reservist assigned to Port Security Unit 309 based in Port Clinton, Ohio. His specially trained unit is tasked with providing land and water-borne force protection for military and commercial vessels carrying troops and supplies headed into the Iraqi theater in support of OIF/OEF. His unit is currently deployed in the Middle East and scheduled to return in December. Zimmerman is an LP agent for Old Navy in the Cleveland area and has previous experience as an assets protection specialist for Target.

1st Lt. Jason Cornwell was recently deployed to Southern Iraq as an intelligence officer with the 2-113th Infantry, Army National Guard, based in Riverdale, NJ. He is a trooper with the New Jersey State Police and former district LP manager with Kmart and OfficeMax.

SSG Mike Matsunaga is currently deployed with the U.S. Army Reserve 327 Military Police Battalion for OIF VII in support of site security roughly west of Fallujah and Habbaniya, Iraq. Prior to his deployment, Matsunaga was an area LP manager for the Carson Pirie Scott division of The Bon Ton Stores.
Matsunaga continues to read LossPrevention magazine while in Iraq, saying “It is extremely nice to be able to keep abreast of the world of LP when deployed.” He also acknowledged “the many fine folks at The Bon Ton Stores [who] have been really supportive of all their military employees and especially those of the Carson Pirie Scott division.”

Pfc. Justin MacIntyre (right) has been deployed to Mosul, Iraq, with the Michigan Army National Guard, 144th military police (MP) company based in Owosso, Michigan. He is serving on a police transition team with responsibility for training Iraqi police. MacIntyre is a regional LP manager for Von Maur in Indianapolis, Indiana.
MacIntyre’s MP unit was recently attacked while guarding a roadside IED. While waiting for the bomb squad, a RPG was fired at their Humvee. While no one was killed, several members of the unit were injured.

Sergeant Major Steve Shepherd (right) is stationed at LSA Anaconda in Balad, Iraq. An 18-year veteran of the Ohio Army National Guard, Shepherd has been assigned to the 2nd 107th C troop out of Greenville, Ohio, with responsibility for base defense operations, facility security, and convoy operations. This is his second activation. He had just returned from a one-year peacekeeping mission in Kosovo prior to being activated to serve in Iraq. Shepherd is the loss prevention safety services manager for Central Ohio-based Limited Brands.

SGT/E-5 Benjamin S. Taylor of the Georgia Army National Guard deployed as an individual augmentee to Port Operations Group, Camp Patriot, Kuwait. Taylor processes all inbound and outbound equipment and personnel through customs procedures and inspection. He also processes incoming Military Exchange products and provides security of high-dollar items. In the states Taylor is a regional LP investigator in the Southeast for Dark Angel Collectables Inc.

E-6 Staff Sergeant Matt Webb (right) is currently stationed with the HHC 180th Infantry, 41st BCT at Camp Phoenix near Kabal, Afghanistan. Prior to his deployment, Webb was a loss prevention manager for Lowe’s in Oklahoma City.

Juan Peralta, 2LT, MI (right) is serving as a supervisor of intelligence analysts for the 34th Infantry Division of the Minnesota National Guard currently stationed near Balad, Iraq. Prior to his deployment, Peralta was a regional loss prevention investigator specializing in financial crimes for Roundy’s Supermarkets in Minneapolis.

The Army and Air Force Exchange (AAFES) has approximately 2,000 personnel working at over sixty retail facilities on U.S. military bases in the Operation Enduring Freedom (Africa, Qatar, UAE, Afghanistan, and Kyrgyzstan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq and Kuwait) theatres. Pictured here are some of the Iraq-based loss prevention professionals who volunteered to work in these hostile and primitive locations for six months or longer.
“We all feel it’s some of the most unique and rewarding work that we have done while working for AAFES,” says Jim King, regional LP manager OEF/OIF.

Sergeant Manny Hornedo with the Army National Guard, 1569th Transportation Company, was killed June 28, 2005, when a suicide bomber attacked his convoy near Tikrit. Prior to his deployment to Iraq, Hornedo was the loss prevention manager at Gap’s flagship store at 34th and Broadway in New York City.
The 27-year-old leaves behind a wife and two small children, 6-year-old Manny Jr. and 4-year-old Marcus, as well as an extended family at Gap. “He had a smile that just lit up a room. To know Manny was to absolutely love him,” said Jennifer Morata, Gap’s senior manager of flagship operations in New York. “He made an impact on so many people. He was just a great, caring person.”
Keith White, senior vice president of loss prevention and corporate administration, added, “Manny was a true hero and an incredible loss prevention professional.”
A trust fund has been set up for Hornedo’s children at Washington Mutual bank #7375, 5323 Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, NY 11220.

CPT Joe McGowan (right), currently deployed with the 143rd Area Support Group of the Connecticut Army National Guard, is the headquarters company commander for the Joint Area Support Group operating in Baghdad.
McGowan is a regional LP manager for Allied Domecq, which includes Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin-Robbins, and Togo’s restaurants. According to McGowan, he was able to utilize his civilian experience by serving as a security officer for the Iraq Convention Center, which was used to plan the Iraqi elections and as a meeting place for their new government.

U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Dickson Bertrand (shown above) is stationed at Forward Operating Base Kalsu south of Bahgdad, near Babil. He works in the Tactical Operations Tent compiling intelligence on Iraqi insurgents. Bertrand is a district loss prevention manager for Lowe’s in the Gainesville/Ocala, Florida, market. He was activated in October, 2004, and is now with the Mississippi National Guard, 155th Brigade Combat Team, based out of Tupelo, Mississippi.

Paul Wozniak is a loss prevention manager for Home Depot in the Chicago market. He is a sergeant in the Marine Corp. and recently returned from deployment in Iraq.

Specialist Jason Hughes (shown at right), HHC 42d Div. Support Command, is a security director for Macy’s Staten Island store. He was deployed to Kuwait from October, 2004, through January, 2005, and is now based at FOB Speicher in Tikrit, Iraq, as the unit armorer in the supply section. He is a member of the New Jersey Army National Guard based in Somerset, NJ.

SGT/E-5 Billy Carrillo is operations NCO for HHC Co. 100/442 infantry stationed in Balad, Iraq. A member of the Army Reserve, Carrillo is a loss prevention agent at Banana Republic in Portland, Oregon. According to his loss prevention manager, Cecily Burton, “He is definitely missed, and we look forward to his safe return.”

CPT Jeffrey J. Graybill (shown above) is serving as the battalion intelligence officer for Task Force 2-156, 256th Brigade Combat Team of the Louisiana Army National Guard stationed in Baghdad. Graybill is a loss prevention investigator for Academy Sports & Outdoors in their Louisiana market. He was deployed to Iraq in May 2004 and is scheduled to return to his home in Lafayette this coming November.

Staff Sargent Johnathan King (right) is a loss prevention coordinator for Harris Teeter supermarkets in the Nashville market. He is stationed on the Iraq/Iran border with the 3/278 R.T.C. of the McMinnville, Tennessee, National Guard.

E-4 Specialist Jeff Nobles is stationed near the Baghdad Airport as a dismount crew member on a Bradley fighting vehicle with K Troop 1/278th ACR from Cookeville, Tennessee. Deployed in November 2004, Nobles is a loss prevention manager for two Proffitt’s department store locations in Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
